"Culture in Movement” is an immersive installation that urges viewers to engage with Japanese culture in
a more personal way. Looking deeper into Japanese American history, Mika was inspired to share her
culture and family history with others and bridge communities together through art. By using natural
materials like wood, bamboo, and mulberry paper, alongside handmade paint brushes and river stones,
Mika aims to create a space where art becomes a shared experience between two people but also oneself
and the space. This piece is designed to encourage interaction, inviting people to step into the cultural
landscape that Mika created. Unlike her usual work, this piece urges individuals to physically participate,
using traditional calligraphy tools to explore the art form themselves. On display are handmade brushes
Mika made from natural elements as her creative interpretation of traditional calligraphy brushes.
Through this installation, Mika hopes to bring people together, not just to view and appreciate art, but to
connect them with the traditions and immerse themselves by experiencing the culture in a more personal
and interactive way.
